Use Case
Before you compare specs, decide what job the drive is doing. The right drive for a 4K video editor is overkill for someone who just wants a backup of family photos.
- Gaming - Look for drives that support fast load times and console compatibility. Games are huge, so capacity matters more than raw peak speed; a 2TB drive at moderate speed often beats a 500GB speed demon.
- Video Editing - This is where high sequential speeds and sustained performance earn their price. Editing 4K or higher directly off the drive calls for Thunderbolt or USB4, plus good heat management so the drive doesn't throttle mid-timeline.
- Photography - Offloading memory cards in the field rewards a rugged, compact drive with solid write speeds. Reliability and durability matter more than chasing the top of the speed charts.
- Backup - Prioritize capacity per dollar and reliability over speed. A drive that sits on a desk and copies files overnight doesn't need a premium interface.
- Travel - Small, light, and tough wins. Look for pocketable designs, drop resistance, and a single cable that works with everything you carry.
- Business - Encryption and password protection become non-negotiable when client data or contracts live on the drive.
- Students - Value and versatility. A mid-capacity drive that plugs into a laptop, tablet, and library computer without adapters is the sweet spot.
Name your primary use first, then let it dictate how much you spend on speed versus space. Most buyers overspend on performance and underspend on capacity.
Capacity
Capacity is the single biggest driver of price, and it's the spec people regret most. Buying one size up is almost always cheaper than buying a second drive later.
- 128GB - Rare now and rarely worth it. Fine for moving documents or a portable OS install, but the cost per gigabyte is poor.
- 250GB - Budget entry point for a few files, a small game library, or a bootable drive. It fills up faster than you expect.
- 500GB - The practical minimum for real use. Good for document backups, photo offloads, and a handful of console games.
- 1TB - The mainstream sweet spot for most shoppers, with strong pricing and enough room for mixed media, backups, and games.
- 2TB - The best balance for gamers and content creators. Modern titles run 100GB or more each, and 4K footage disappears into storage quickly.
- 4TB - For video professionals, large photo libraries, or a full system backup with room to grow. Expect a noticeable price jump.
- 8TB - Archive territory. Usually larger, sometimes desktop-style, and priced for people who genuinely need a portable library.
Estimate your current data, then double it. If you're torn between two sizes, the larger one also tends to be slightly faster, since higher-capacity drives use more memory chips in parallel.
Interface
The interface is the ceiling on your speed. A blazing drive plugged into a slow port runs at the port's pace, so this spec has to match your computer, not just your ambitions.
- USB 3.0 (5Gbps) - The old baseline, capping real-world transfers around 400 to 450 MB/s. Still fine for backups and documents, and it works on nearly anything.
- USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10Gbps) - The most common standard on portable SSDs today, delivering roughly 1,000 MB/s. Broad compatibility and great value; this is the default choice for most people.
- USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 (20Gbps) - Around 2,000 MB/s, but only if your host supports it. Support is spotty, especially on Macs, so verify before paying extra.
- USB4 (40Gbps) - The modern high-speed standard, compatible with Thunderbolt ports on most machines. A strong future-proof pick on newer laptops.
- Thunderbolt 3 - Up to 40Gbps with excellent Mac support and consistent real-world performance. Cables and enclosures cost more.
- Thunderbolt 4 - Same peak bandwidth as Thunderbolt 3 but with stricter requirements and better reliability, plus daisy-chaining.
- Thunderbolt 5 - The new top tier, aimed at professionals moving massive files. Only worth it if your machine supports it and your workflow is bottlenecked today.
Check your laptop's port specification first, then buy one tier at or just above it. Paying for 40Gbps on a machine with a 10Gbps port is money spent on a number you'll never see.
Speed
Advertised read speeds are best-case sequential numbers. What matters is whether the drive can hold that pace long enough to finish your transfer.
- Up to 600 MB/s - SATA-based territory. Still around five times faster than a mechanical hard drive and perfectly adequate for backups and console game storage.
- 600 to 1,100 MB/s - The USB 3.2 Gen 2 mainstream. Fast enough for editing 1080p and most 4K footage, and the best value per dollar.
- 1,100 to 2,000 MB/s - Requires a 20Gbps or Thunderbolt connection. Noticeable when moving folders of tens of gigabytes at a time.
- 2,000 to 3,000 MB/s - Serious creative workflow speed for multi-stream editing and large project files.
- Over 3,000 MB/s - Thunderbolt 5 and top-end USB4 drives. Genuinely transformative for professional video, but the price and heat both climb.
Also look at write speed, which is often lower than the headline read figure, and check reviews for sustained transfer behavior. Many drives start fast, then slow sharply once their cache fills partway through a big copy.
Drive Type
Inside every external SSD is one of two technologies, and it explains most of the price and speed difference between similar-looking products.
- NVMe - The faster architecture, capable of everything above roughly 600 MB/s. Necessary for high-speed interfaces, and now common even in mid-range portables. It runs warmer, which is why heat management shows up on premium models.
- SATA - Capped near 550 MB/s no matter what port you use. Cooler, cheaper, often more power-efficient, and completely fine for backups, document storage, and console libraries.
If a listing advertises 1,000 MB/s or more, it's NVMe. If you only need reliable capacity and don't move huge files daily, a SATA drive saves real money with no practical downside.
Connector
The connector determines whether the drive works out of the box or sends you hunting for an adapter. Check what's in the box, not just what the drive supports.
- USB-C - The standard for modern drives and modern laptops, tablets, and consoles. Reversible, fast, and future-proof.
- USB-A - The classic rectangular plug, still essential for older desktops, work computers, and many TVs. Speeds are typically limited to 10Gbps or below.
- Dual USB-C and USB-A - Either two cables in the box or a clever reversible plug. The most flexible option if you move between new and old machines.
- Lightning - Aimed at older iPhones and iPads. Only relevant if you're on pre-USB-C Apple hardware.
- Micro USB - Found on older or very cheap drives. Avoid it; the connector is fragile and the speeds are dated.
Cable quality matters as much as the plug. A short, well-built cable rated for your drive's speed prevents the maddening problem of a fast SSD performing like a flash stick.
Form Factor
Shape affects portability, cooling, and how likely the drive is to survive your bag. Match the body to where the drive will actually live.
- Pocket Portable - The classic credit-card-sized slab. Best all-around balance of size, capacity options, and price.
- Thumb Drive Style - Stick-shaped and cable-free, plugging straight into a port. Extremely convenient for students and quick transfers, though sustained speeds can suffer from heat.
- Rugged - Rubber-armored bodies built for job sites and field shoots. Heavier and bulkier, but they shrug off drops and weather.
- Magnetic Snap-On - Attaches to the back of a compatible phone for direct mobile recording. A niche but genuinely useful design for creators shooting on phones.
- Desktop - Larger enclosures, sometimes with active cooling or multiple drives inside. Best sustained performance and highest capacities, but not something you carry.
- M.2 Enclosure - A shell you populate with your own SSD. The cheapest route to high capacity if you're comfortable with a few screws, and easily upgradable.
- Ultra Slim - Wafer-thin designs that vanish into a laptop sleeve. Beautiful, though thin metal bodies can get hot under long transfers.
If the drive travels, pick rugged or pocket portable. If it lives on a desk doing heavy work, a larger body with better cooling will hold its speed far longer.
Features
Features separate a bare drive from a genuinely useful tool. Some are practical security essentials, others are pure flourish.
- Hardware Encryption - Encryption handled by a dedicated chip, so there's no speed penalty and no software to install. The gold standard for sensitive data.
- Password Protected - Software-based locking. Effective and common, but usually needs the vendor's app installed on each computer.
- Fingerprint Unlock - A biometric sensor on the drive itself. Fast and convenient, though it adds cost and another point of failure.
- Shock Resistant - Internal bracing and cushioning. Since SSDs have no moving parts, they handle bumps well by nature, but this adds real margin.
- Drop Proof - Look for a stated height rating in feet or meters rather than vague marketing language.
- Backup Software - Bundled tools for scheduled or one-click backups. Handy for beginners; power users often ignore it.
- RGB Lighting - Purely cosmetic, aimed at gaming setups. It also draws a little extra power.
- LED Activity Light - Small but genuinely useful, showing you when data is transferring so you don't unplug mid-write.
- Carabiner Loop - Clips to a bag or belt loop. Simple insurance against losing a small, expensive object.
- Built-In Cable - An attached cable you can never forget, though if it fails the whole drive is compromised.
- Heatsink Cooling - Fins or thermal pads that keep fast NVMe drives from throttling. Increasingly important above 2,000 MB/s.
- Aluminum Body - Doubles as a heatsink and feels premium. Better sustained speeds than plastic shells.
- Plug and Play - No drivers, no setup. Verify the file system, since some drives ship formatted for Windows and need reformatting for Mac or console use.
For business or personal data, hardware encryption is the feature worth paying for. For fast drives, cooling matters more than any security or lighting extra.
Compatibility
Nearly every drive works with nearly every device, but formatting and connector limits create real friction. Confirm compatibility for every device you plan to use, not just your main one.
- Windows PC - Universally supported. Drives typically ship in NTFS or exFAT, both of which Windows reads and writes without fuss.
- strong>Mac - Works with any drive, but NTFS-formatted drives are read-only until reformatted to APFS or exFAT. Thunderbolt models tend to deliver the most consistent Mac performance.
- iPhone - USB-C iPhones can record video directly to an external SSD, which is a major workflow win for creators. Older Lightning models need an adapter and are far more limited.
- iPad - Modern USB-C iPads handle external SSDs well for editing and file storage.
- Android - Broad support over USB-C, though some phones need a file manager app to browse the drive.
- PS5 - An external SSD stores and plays PS4 games directly and archives PS5 titles for fast reinstalls. Note that PS5 games must be moved to internal storage to play.
- PS4 - Full support for playing games directly from the drive, with a noticeable loading improvement.
- Xbox Series X|S - Same pattern: play older titles directly, store newer ones. Optimized current-gen games need the internal drive or a proprietary expansion card.
- Steam Deck - Small drives work well for expanding a library, though bus power and heat are worth considering.
- Chromebook - Generally plug and play with exFAT formatting.
- Smart TV - Often requires USB-A and a specific format. Check your TV's manual before assuming it will mount.
- Camera - Many mirrorless and cinema cameras record straight to SSD, but they usually require a specific speed class and format.
The most common frustration isn't hardware, it's formatting. Choose exFAT if you're sharing a drive across Windows, Mac, and consoles, and reformat before you load it up.
Durability Rating
IP ratings tell you exactly how much dust and water a drive can survive. The first digit is dust, the second is water, and higher is better.
- IP53 - Basic dust resistance and protection from light spray. Fine for everyday commuting.
- IP54 - Handles splashes from any direction. A reasonable baseline for bag life.
- IP55 - Withstands low-pressure water jets. Useful for outdoor work.
- IP65 - Fully dust-tight plus jet resistance. A solid mark for field photographers.
- IP66 - Dust-tight and resistant to powerful water jets. Genuinely job-site ready.
- IP67 - Dust-tight and survives immersion in one meter of water for 30 minutes. The most common premium rugged rating.
- IP68 - The top tier, rated for deeper and longer immersion. Overkill unless you work near water or in harsh conditions.
If your drive stays on a desk, skip the rating entirely and save the money. If it travels to shoots, beaches, or work sites, IP65 or better is worth every dollar, and pair it with a stated drop rating.
Brand
Brand matters here more than in most electronics categories, because storage failure means data loss. Established makers offer better controllers, better firmware, and warranties they actually honor.
- Samsung - The reputation leader with the T7 and T9 lines. Excellent build quality, reliable performance, and strong encryption software, at a premium price.
- SanDisk - The Extreme and Extreme Pro portables are staples for photographers thanks to rugged bodies and carabiner loops. Read recent reviews, as reliability has drawn scrutiny on some generations.
- Western Digital - Parent of SanDisk, with the My Passport and Black gaming lines. Dependable and widely available.
- Crucial - Micron-owned and consistently strong value. The X9 and X10 lines deliver honest performance at fair prices.
- Seagate - Broad lineup including officially licensed console drives and Ultra Touch portables.
- LaCie - Seagate's creative-professional brand, known for the Rugged series and Thunderbolt models aimed at video work.
- Lexar - Competitive pricing with solid performance, popular with photographers.
- Kingston - A reliable, unflashy choice with a long history in memory and storage.
- Corsair - Gaming-oriented, with fast USB4 and Thunderbolt models.

Check the warranty length, typically three to five years, and always keep a second copy of anything irreplaceable. Even the best drive is a single point of failure, and no brand changes that.
Color
Color is the one spec with no performance impact, but it does have a practical side.
- Black and Gray - The most common and the most discreet. Easy to match with most laptops, though harder to spot in a dark bag.
- Silver and White - A clean look that pairs naturally with Apple hardware. Light colors show scuffs more readily.
- Blue, Red, Green, Pink - Genuinely useful if you own several drives, since color-coding by project or client beats squinting at labels.
- Gold - Usually reserved for premium or limited editions.
Pick whatever you like, but if you juggle multiple drives, buy them in different colors. It's the cheapest organization system there is.
