The first thing to sort out is whether you're buying the machine or the parts that keep it running. Listings in this category cover both, and they look surprisingly similar in search results.

  • Weed Eater - The complete trimmer: powerhead, shaft, and cutting head. This is what you want if you're starting from scratch or replacing an old unit.
  • Trimmer Line - Bulk spools or pre-cut lengths of cutting line. The single most common repeat purchase, and the cheapest way to improve cutting performance.

Battery Voltage

Voltage is a rough proxy for power on cordless trimmers, while amp-hours determine how long that power lasts. Higher voltage means more torque to push through thick grass without bogging down.

  • 12V and 18V - Compact and very light, best for touch-ups along driveways and flower beds. They stall in heavy growth.

Cutting Width

Cutting width, also called swath, is the diameter of the circle the line sweeps. Wider swaths finish faster but demand more power and more careful steering near plants.

  • Under 10 in - Very precise and light. Suited to tight borders, raised beds, and delicate landscaping.
  • 10 in to 12 in - Typical of small 18V and 20V trimmers. Fine for sidewalk edges and small yards.
  • 13 in to 14 in - The residential standard. A good balance of speed, control, and battery drain for most properties.
  • 15 in to 16 in - Covers ground noticeably faster and is common on 40V and higher cordless plus mid-size gas units.
  • 17 in to 18 in - Serious coverage for large lots, usually paired with straight-shaft gas or high-voltage battery trimmers.
  • 19 in to 22 in - Commercial-scale swaths for fields and acreage. Heavy and generally overkill for a typical yard.

Pick the widest swath your power source can actually drive. An underpowered trimmer with a wide head just slows down and snaps line.


Shaft Type

Shaft design determines your reach, your posture, and whether the tool fits in your trunk. It's an easy spec to overlook and one you'll feel within five minutes of trimming.

  • Straight Shaft - Longer reach for getting under decks, fences, and shrubs, and the only style that accepts brush-cutter blades on most models. Preferred by taller users and professionals.
  • Curved Shaft - Shorter and better balanced for close-in work around the house. Comfortable and maneuverable, but harder on your back for long sessions and limited on attachments.
  • Telescoping Shaft - Adjusts to your height, which matters a lot if multiple people in the household use it. Look for a solid clamp that won't slip under load.

If you're over six feet tall or trim for more than twenty minutes at a stretch, go straight or telescoping. Your lower back will notice the difference.


Line Diameter

Line diameter is the single cheapest upgrade or downgrade you can make. Thicker line cuts tougher growth but needs more motor torque, and using the wrong size can damage the head.

Engine Size

For gas trimmers, displacement in cubic centimeters signals cutting power and how well the unit resists bogging down. Bigger engines also mean more weight, noise, and fuel.
