Audio-Technica AT-LP120XUSB-BK Direct-Drive Turntable (Analog & USB), Fully Manual, Hi-Fi, 3 Speed, Convert Vinyl to Digital, Anti-Skate and Variable Pitch Control, Black

The Audio-Technica AT-LP120XUSB-BK turntable presents a compelling blend of features and performance for its price point, positioning it as a strong contender for vinyl enthusiasts and beginners alike.

Value:
The AT-LP120XUSB-BK excels with its direct-drive DC servo motor, ensuring consistent playback at selectable 33, 45, and 78 RPM speeds. Users consistently praise its high-fidelity audio and sound quality, offering a genuinely engaging vinyl experience. The fully manual operation provides granular control over playback, featuring adjustable dynamic anti-skate, variable pitch with quartz speed lock, and a balanced S-shaped tonearm with hydraulically damped lift control. A key utility is the integrated USB output, allowing for straightforward conversion of vinyl records to digital audio files using free software like Audacity. The built-in phono preamp is defeatable, offering flexible connectivity to powered speakers or external preamps, a notable improvement over previous models. Its ease of setup and robust build quality are frequently highlighted as positives, and the included AT-VM95E cartridge, while entry-level, is part of a series that offers a clear and easy upgrade path for future sonic improvements.

Trade-offs:
While packed with features, some trade-offs are present. The fully manual operation means the absence of auto-return or auto-stop features, which might be a minor inconvenience for those accustomed to automated turntables. The turntable is largely constructed from plastic, aside from the aluminum tonearm and platter, which can give it a less premium feel than higher-end models. Similarly, the aluminum platter, while heavy, could benefit from additional damping to further mitigate resonance, though this can be addressed with aftermarket mats. The included AT-VM95E cartridge is a capable starting point but is considered basic; an upgrade will yield superior sound. Furthermore, this model is not intended for heavy-duty DJ scratching, due to a lower-torque motor optimized for listening rather than performance use.

Verdict:
Despite these minor limitations, the Audio-Technica AT-LP120XUSB-BK remains an outstanding value proposition. The perceived "flaws" like plastic construction or the entry-level cartridge are common at this price point and are easily justified by its comprehensive feature set and strong core performance. For anyone seeking a highly capable, direct-drive turntable with digital archiving capabilities and a clear upgrade path, this unit delivers exceptional utility and sound without a prohibitive investment. It’s a definitive buy for the discerning listener who values control, sound quality, and versatility.
