Hayward AquaNaut 400 Suction Pool Cleaner, Automatic Pool Vacuum (4 Wheel) | W3PHS41CST Cleaner for In-Ground Pools up to 20 x 40 ft | All the benefits of a pool cleaning robot with no complicated setup

The Hayward AquaNaut 400 is a powerhouse suction cleaner designed for owners of large in-ground pools who deal with significant debris loads. Its standout feature is the patented V-Flex technology, which uses self-adjusting variable vanes to swallow large leaves and twigs that would instantly choke most other suction vacuums. Combined with a true 4-wheel drive system and high-traction humped tires, this unit navigates deep ends and climbs walls with more consistency than its 2-wheel counterparts, making it a reliable choice for pools up to 20 x 40 ft.

Value vs. Trade-off

The primary strength of the AquaNaut 400 is its versatility and debris handling. It includes three interchangeable throats that allow it to maintain peak performance even when paired with energy-efficient variable speed pumps, ensuring you don’t have to run your pump at max RPM just to get the pool clean. Users also benefit from pre-programmed steering sequences that prevent the unit from getting stuck in corners or circling aimlessly.

The trade-offs are mostly related to long-term maintenance. Because it is a suction-side cleaner, all debris ends up in your pump basket or filter, requiring more frequent manual cleanings compared to a self-contained robotic unit. Additionally, those with rougher pool finishes like PebbleTec should expect to replace the rubber tires every 12–18 months as they wear down from constant climbing.

Despite the cost of occasional replacement tires and the need for regular filter rinsing, the AquaNaut 400 remains a top-tier "buy" for the budget-conscious owner. It provides near-robotic levels of coverage and debris clearance at a significantly lower upfront price point, offering a "set it and forget it" solution that outperforms cheaper, less capable suction cleaners.
