Canon RF100-400mm F5.6-8 is USM Lens | Mirrorless Telephoto Zoom Lens, Compatible with EOS R Series Mirrorless Cameras

The Canon RF100-400mm F5.6-8 IS USM is a masterclass in compact telephoto design, offering an accessible entry point into long-reach photography without the typical bulk or price tag of L-series glass.

The Strengths
The standout feature is its incredible portability; weighing only 1.4 lbs, it is roughly the size of a 70-300mm lens but provides significantly more reach. Users consistently praise the Nano USM autofocus, which is nearly silent and exceptionally fast, making it viable for birding and sports. The 5.5 stops of Optical Image Stabilization (increasing to 6 stops with IBIS) is highly effective, allowing for sharp handheld shots even at the 400mm long end. Additionally, the 0.41x maximum magnification at 400mm provides surprisingly good "tele-macro" capabilities for close-up detail work.

The Trade-offs
The primary compromise is the slow f/8 maximum aperture at 400mm. This necessitates shooting in bright daylight or pushing ISO levels higher in low-light conditions to maintain fast shutter speeds. The build, while sturdy, lacks weather sealing and utilizes a plastic mount, and the package notably excludes a lens hood.

The Verdict
While the narrow aperture limits its utility in dim environments, the price-to-performance ratio is unbeatable for the EOS R system. For hikers, travel photographers, and daytime wildlife enthusiasts, the minor trade-off in light transmission is a small price to pay for a lens that offers 400mm reach in a backpack-friendly form factor. It remains a must-buy for hobbyists who prioritize weight and autofocus speed over professional-grade low-light performance.
