Fluance RT85N Reference Vinyl Turntable Record Player, Nagaoka MP-110 Cartridge, Acrylic Platter, Walnut

The Fluance RT85N is a performance-first turntable that prioritizes high-end audio components over entry-level convenience, making it a benchmark for value in the mid-range market.

### Value vs. Trade-off

The Strengths:
The centerpiece is the Nagaoka MP-110 cartridge, a premium choice celebrated for its warm, balanced tonal accuracy and exceptional ability to minimize surface noise. This is paired with a high-density acrylic platter that provides the necessary mass for superb speed stability (0.07% Wow/Flutter) and a detailed, 3-dimensional soundstage. Users frequently praise the solid walnut MDF plinth and isolated motor, which work in tandem to eliminate mechanical vibration and ensure a dead-quiet background.

The Trade-offs:
To maintain its price-to-performance ratio, the RT85N lacks a built-in phono preamp, requiring an external unit or an amplifier with a dedicated phono input. The operation is manual-start with auto-stop only, meaning the platter stops at the end of a side but the tonearm does not return. Additionally, the tonearm lacks VTA (Vertical Tracking Angle) adjustment, which may limit some advanced cartridge upgrade paths.

The Verdict:
While the lack of an internal preamp and automated arm return are notable omissions for beginners, they are strategic choices that favor audio quality. By focusing the budget on audiophile-grade hardware—specifically the Nagaoka stylus and the heavy acrylic platter—Fluance has delivered a rig that competes with turntables nearly double its price. For the listener who values pure sonic fidelity over all-in-one simplicity, the RT85N is an unbeatable value and an absolute "buy."
